Self-worth and Instagram (this one goes deep…).
Instagram (and social media in general) is a strange place.
On the one hand, I’ve learned so much from it, met so many amazing people because of it, and have used my platform to encourage people, from all around the world, on their journey.
On the other hand, it’s almost like being back in high school, worrying about who likes you, who wants to invite you to this or that, and how good you look walking through the hallways.
When you post something and don’t get the typical amount of ‘likes’ or comments, it can make your head spin and you start wondering what you did wrong.
Why don’t they like me?!?
I have to wonder sometimes though, are we putting too much emphasis on the external validation of strangers than on the internal validation of self?
Am I putting more stock in someone’s double-tap than in my own belief in my worthiness?
When you really look at it you have to ask yourself some hard questions:
Why am I posting this?
Who is this serving?
Does this feel good to me?
Am I proud of myself regardless of whether I hear back from others?
Because if it’s for nothing else, Instagram should be a place where we feel good about ourselves and the parts of our lives that we share. We shouldn’t feel pressured to show up, rather we should want to do it and we should feel good about it even if we get the dreaded ‘crickets’.
This is still a work in progress for me, but I know I need to look for the validation from within, not from the outside. We all need to be our own biggest cheerleaders.
